VWAP Pullback on XAU/USD: trading gold off the value zone in the New York session

MT5 VWAP on gold is built from your broker’s tick volume. It still works on trend days, if you know its limits.

VWAP is the volume-weighted average price since the session open. In equities, it’s the level institutions use to grade their own execution. On spot gold there’s a catch worth knowing up front: there’s no centralized volume, so VWAP on MT5 is built from your broker’s tick volume. It’s still useful, as a reference zone rather than a level the whole market is watching.

The short version

  • VWAP on MT5 gold is built from broker tick volume: a reference zone, not a level the whole market watches.
  • Trend days only: price on one side of VWAP for 45+ minutes from 12:30 UTC, at least 1.5× M5 ATR away.
  • Pullback to VWAP (touch or pierce up to $1), M5 closes back above, enter on the break of that candle’s high. Stop under the low plus $1.

Setup

Daily-reset VWAP on XAU/USD M5. Only use it during the New York session, 12:30 to 16:30 UTC (see the best time to trade gold). That’s when gold’s tick volume peaks, and VWAP best reflects where most of the day’s trading actually happened.

Trend days only

Mandatory condition: from 12:30 UTC, price has stayed on one side of VWAP for at least 45 minutes and has traveled at least 1.5x M5 ATR away from it. If price keeps crossing back and forth, gold is ranging around its average that day and a VWAP pullback means nothing.

Entry rules

  1. In an uptrend, price pulls back to VWAP. A touch, or a pierce of up to $1, both count.
  2. Wait for an M5 candle to close back above VWAP. A close more than $2 below VWAP means the intraday trend may be broken. Walk away.
  3. Enter when the next candle breaks the high of that confirmation candle.

Stop and target

Stop under the pullback low plus $1. TP1 at the session high, close half. Move the rest to breakeven and hold until 16:30 UTC or until an M15 candle closes below VWAP.

A fixed $15 to $20 stop only makes sense on days gold is going ballistic. On a normal day a sensible stop is $4 to $8. A fixed stop that ignores actual volatility means your position size is wrong from the start.

Which touch

The first pullback to VWAP after the trend forms is the best one. The second is still tradeable. The third isn’t: three trips back to the average in one session means the push is fading.

A worked example

From 12:30 UTC gold trends up and stays above VWAP for an hour, reaching 2,346 while VWAP sits near 2,335. M5 ATR is $2.60, so price is well over 1.5× ATR away. At 13:55 gold pulls back to 2,336.40, a $0.60 pierce below VWAP at 2,337. The next M5 candle closes at 2,338.20, back above. Its high is 2,339.10.

  • Entry: buy stop at 2,339.20, just above the confirmation high.
  • Stop: pullback low 2,336.40 minus $1 = 2,335.40. Risk: $3.80, inside the normal $4 to $8 band on a calmer day.
  • TP1: session high 2,346, close half. Runner to 16:30 UTC or an M15 close below VWAP.

Illustrative prices. On a $5,000 account risking 0.5% ($25): $25 ÷ ($3.80 × 100) ≈ 0.06 lots.

Pre-trade checklist

  1. New York session, 12:30 to 16:30 UTC?
  2. Trend day by the definition: 45+ minutes one side, 1.5× ATR away?
  3. First or second touch of VWAP this session, not the third?
  4. No data at 14:00 UTC or a Fed speaker in the next 20 minutes?
  5. Stop sized from the actual pullback low, not a fixed number?

Traps to avoid

Days with data at 14:00 UTC (ISM, JOLTS, Fed speakers). The evening trend gets cut by the release, and the pullback to VWAP right before it is really the market standing still, waiting. No VWAP entries in the 20 minutes before news.

Drill it before you trade real money

Because MT5 VWAP depends on each broker’s tick volume, results on one broker won’t necessarily carry over to another. Drill it on the broker you’ll actually trade: the last 30 New York sessions, how many were trend days by the definition above, and the result of the first pullback each session.

Quick FAQ

Why not use VWAP in the Asian session?

Tick volume is thin, and VWAP reflects very little real trading. The New York session is when it means the most on gold.

Does anchoring matter?

Use a daily reset and keep it consistent. Changing the anchor every day makes your journal data meaningless.
