London Breakout on EUR/USD: trading the first push of the London session

The Asian box, the London open, and the candle-close rule that keeps the opening sweep from taking your stop.

The London Breakout is the most predictable setup in forex: you know the time, you know the zone, you just don’t know the direction. That’s exactly why it gets swept so often. Here’s how to trade it with rules, and which days to leave it alone.

The short version

  • Mark the Asian box on EUR/USD from 00:00 to 07:00 UTC. Under 15 pips is the best day; over 30, skip.
  • Wait for an M5 close outside the box with a body at least two thirds of its range, then enter the retest within 6 candles.
  • Never two entries in the same direction in one session; close everything by 10:30 UTC.

The zone to mark

Mark the high and low of the Asian session on EUR/USD, from 00:00 to 07:00 UTC. Those two levels are the box. London opens at 07:00 UTC in summer and 08:00 UTC in winter. Big money arrives right then, and the first thing it usually does is test one side of the box.

Measure the box before anything else:

  • Under 15 pips: tight range, the market is coiled. These are the days the setup has the biggest edge.
  • 15 to 30 pips: tradeable, but your stop is wider and your target needs to be further.
  • Over 30 pips: skip it. Asia already did the moving, and London is more likely to reverse than extend.

Entry rules

Don’t park a Buy Stop and a Sell Stop on both sides. That gets you filled by the very first sweep, then dragged straight back into your stop. The FXScalpers rules:

  1. Wait for an M5 candle to close outside the box. A wick poking through doesn’t count.
  2. The breakout candle’s body must be at least two thirds of its full range. A breakout candle with a long wick is a rejection.
  3. Enter on the retest of the broken edge, within 6 M5 candles. No retest, no trade. Never chase.

Stop, target, and when to move to breakeven

Stop goes beyond the breakout candle, plus 2 pips for spread. If that stop is wider than the Asian box itself, the zone isn’t worth trading.

TP1 at 1R, close half. TP2 at the height of the Asian box projected from the breakout, or yesterday’s high or low, whichever is closer. Once TP1 hits, stop to entry. If TP2 hasn’t hit by 10:30 UTC, close it all: after that London is past its peak and price tends to drift back into the range.

Pre-session checklist

  1. Asian box marked, width measured in pips.
  2. No eurozone PMI or CPI in the first two hours of London, not a gap Monday, not NFP Friday, not a UK holiday.
  3. Entry rule written: M5 close outside, full body, retest within 6 candles.
  4. Lot size calculated for the stop the box width implies.
  5. Exit time set: 10:30 UTC.

Days to stay flat

  • Big European data inside the first two hours of London (eurozone PMI, CPI). The breakout looks real, but nobody holds the direction. Here’s how to read the calendar fast.
  • Monday with a weekend gap, and the Friday of NFP.
  • UK bank holidays. No London, no London Breakout.

Traps to avoid

The most common loss: an M5 candle closes outside, the retest looks perfect, you enter, and price reverses straight back through the entire Asian box. That’s a liquidity sweep, not a breakout. The tell is a break in the first 15 minutes of the session that runs more than 10 pips fast without a single pause. When you see that, the first trade usually loses. Never re-enter the same direction twice in the same session.

Drill it before you trade real money

Open EUR/USD on M5, scroll back three months, mark the Asian box every day and apply the exact rules above. Log 40 days in a row: date, box width, setup or no setup, result in R. The setup is worth using when total R stays positive after 1 pip of cost per trade.

Quick FAQ

Why not use buy stop and sell stop orders on both sides?

Because the first move of London is often a sweep of one side of the box. Stop orders get filled by the sweep and dragged straight back.

Does it work on GBP/USD?

Yes, with wider boxes and stops. Keep the same rules and recalibrate the pip thresholds with 40 logged days.
